Meet the Corps
We proudly introduce the Volunteer Teaching Corps 2009-2010! With a total of 38 volunteers, there are many amazing and exceptional individuals for you to meet. Each month, we will highlight the lives and experiences of a few volunteers, giving you the chance to get to know who is a part of the VTC and where we come from. From each and every member of the VTC, we hope to have you join us next year!
Landon Bergner
Dartmouth College ‘09
Landon Bergner, originally from Holyoke, CO, graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in Classical Studies. His leadership abilities were exemplified through his work as Co-Chair of Students Fighting Hunger and acting as Assistant Coach for the Wrestling Club at his high school. Landon also served the community as a part of Children's Creative Dance and coordinating service activities for the Gamma Delta Chi fraternity. Landon credits his parents and siblings with guiding him toward his new role in education. Landon serves as fifth grade teacher at St. Gregory Episcopal School.
Elena Brandewie
University of Notre Dame ‘09
Elena Brandewie, a Valparaiso, IN native, is a University of Notre Dame alumna with a dual degree in Philosophy and Spanish. Elena has a passion for education. Throughout college, she has volunteered with multiple schools and in multiple ways. She was a catechist volunteer teacher at St. Adalbert's in South Bend, IN as well as volunteering to teach English in a school while studying abroad in Santiago, Chile. Aside from these activities, Elena's passion for social justice has brought her to the School of the Americas Watch in Georgia as well as participating in week-long seminars on various social justice issues. Also, Elena combined her interest in environmental issues with education by starting environmental education programs in two South Bend schools as part of GreeND. Elena is excited to be serving as the middle school Science teacher at St. Helena of the Cross School.
Lisa Low
Rice University ‘09
Lisa Low has an English degree from Rice University and hails from North Potomac, MD. Lisa's faith forms a strong foundation in her life, and was a large part of her college experience as she spent four years with the Cornerstone Christian Fellowship. In addition, she volunteered with the College Assistance Peer Program and the Nehemiah Center, working to help college students and tutor elementary students, respectively. Lisa's proficiency in multiple languages ia a great asset as she teaches Language Arts with a fourth grade homeroom at St. Therese Chinese Catholic School.
Katherine Malnor
Macalester College '06
Katie Malnor, originally from Madison, Wisconsin, graduated from Macalester College with a degree in Sociology. At Macalester Katie was a member of the softball team for four years, and also volunteered with Adopt-a-Grandparent and with Big Brothers, Big Sisters. Katie recently worked as a junior high teacher through the Guadalupe Alternative Programs in St. Paul, MN, as an AmeriCorps member. She also coached volleyball and swimming while in Minnesota. Katie is teaching eighth grade Math and Science at San Miguel School - Gary Comer Campus.
Erin Mooney
St. Michael's College '08
Erin Mooney, a native of Center Barnstead, New Hampshire, graduated from St. Michael's College with a degree in Art and Education. Active in Concord Head Start and Little Folks School House as a child care provider, Erin realized education was her specialty. Her leadership skills were further depicted through her work as a Resident Advisor and also as a retreat leader through LEAP. She also was an active participant of Christian Appalachian Volunteer Project. Erin is teaching first grade at Visitation Elementary School.
